Tucked in a quiet, tree-lined loop in O’Connor, 9 Hakea Crescent is a unique property with the rare ability to host life at every scale — from the tranquil morning coffee to milestone celebrations that become core memories.

Rich in superlatives, it’s an executive home — though not in the way you might expect. When Stephen and Jodie built it, they had two kids still at home and a vision that broke the mould.

“We only built the number of bedrooms we needed — just three — because we wanted to focus on the living spaces,” Stephen says. “That’s the defining feature of this house. Every living space has its own flavour.”

At the heart of this concept is an expansive open living/dining area with raked ceilings reaching 4 metres, casual dining, a gas fireplace and a big-screen TV built into the wall.

Also in this space is the designer kitchen, characterised by custom black cabinetry, feature lighting, a stunning backlit quartz backsplash and benchtop with black granite extension, quality appliances and a butler’s pantry.

This flows out to an outdoor space that will stop you in your tracks.

It features a massive covered entertaining area, complete with a drinks fridge, a full outdoor kitchen, an Italian pizza oven, infrared heaters, and a sparkling plunge pool featuring a waterfall.

“It’s a glorious entertaining space in summer, but also in the winter, with the infrared heaters and the pizza oven going. We’ve had many long lunches, afternoon aperativos and late evenings out there,” Stephen says.

This space peers through glass to the gallery, featuring a 22-metre rammed-earth wall reaching heights of up to 6 metres — the ideal gallery to display artworks.

The wall is shared with the formal lounge room — an elegant backdrop for special occasions. Here, built into custom blackwood cabinetry, two EuroCave refrigerators keep up to 288 bottles temperature-controlled. A gas fireplace keeps the room toasty in colder seasons.

The master suite completes this floor. Featuring its private, fully-enclosed courtyard, a chic ensuite bathroom with a tub and dual showerheads and a generous walk-in wardrobe. It’s a true retreat.

“The courtyard faces east, so it’s a great spot to enjoy your morning cup of coffee and watch the sun rise,” Stephen says.

Outdoor entertaining

The outdoor entertaining space will stop you in your tracks.

Upstairs, flanked by two generous bedrooms — each with its own wardrobe and bathroom — is a versatile formal living area, perfect as a library, lounge, home office or rumpus room.

“It gets the Easterly morning sun, too,” Stephen says. “We put a couple of Chestfields in there so you can curl up and read.”

Occupying the entire basement level, a home theatre has been integrated into the 30 sqm wine cellar/rumpus, pairing a 3-metre theatre screen and comfy recliner chairs with shelving for up to 1000 bottles of wine.

“We’re wine lovers and collectors, that’s pretty clear,” Stephen laughs. “We think this home will be taken by someone who enjoys the finer things in life.”

He adds that the residence was built around people who want a home with all the entertainment options.

“Whatever the occasion, there’s a space for it,” he says.

“In the colder months, we’d congregate in the formal lounge and dining room, and as the evening wore on, we’d grab a bottle of wine and sit in front of the fireplace.

“We’ve celebrated many milestones here. At big parties, you’d have the oldies congregating in the lounge with tea, coffee and pastries, the young people in the alfresco area, around the plunge pool with the music turned up, and others chilling out in the living room watching something on a big screen.”

The home, which Stephen describes as a “heart and soul” project, boasts features you won’t see anywhere else.

“The door to the cellar, we found in an antiques store in Morocco, and you couldn’t get a grander entrance. We went to great efforts to get it into the country, and it’ll pain me to leave it behind — but I couldn’t take it away from the house.”

As beautiful and comfortable as the residence is, there are plenty of reasons to get outside.

“In autumn and spring, our street is alive with colour,” Stephen says. “It’s quiet, safe and beautiful.”

Nearby, the O’Connor and Lyneham shops offer convenience, while tennis courts at the end of the street, countless nearby paths, and parklands and wetlands for walks offer plenty of reasons to get outside — if you ever feel the need to leave.
