UPDATED 4 September, 11:50 am: A NSW Police spokesperson confirmed an investigation has started after the fire caused significant damage to the front portion of the building.

Emergency services were called to Vulcan Street business in Moruya, following reports of a fire, around 3 am today (4 September).

“Officers attached to South Coast Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the incident, which is being treated as suspicious.”

4 September, 10:30 am: An early morning fire has destroyed two businesses on Moruya’s main street.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintentent Adam Dewberry said emergency services were called just after 2:40 am today (Thursday, 4 September).

He said the fire was mostly extinguished by about 9 am.

“We had two shops on fire, single-level shops. They’ve been destroyed,” he said.

“It took about two hours to contain the fire. It has been contained to those two shops, with the fire not being able to spread to neighbouring buildings.”

The Vulcan Street businesses were located across from the Adelaide Hotel.

Firefighters were called in from Wollongong to help contain the blaze, while NSW RFS also assisted.

Superintentent Dewberry said the possible cause of the blaze would be investigated.

“The hotspots are still being extinguished and investigations are commencing into where and how that fire started.”

No-one was inside the building, and no injuries have been reported.

A NSW Police spokesperson called for anyone who had dashcam footage or further information to come forward.

They are interested in footage from anyone who was driving in the area between midnight and 1 am.

Motorists are also asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
