Isn’t that metal part a white supremacist symbol? I remember seeing gangs of skinheads in the 1980s wearing patches with that symbol on their jackets.
They could well have just been skateboarders with Red Dragon Skateboards patches…

That’s quite cool in my opinion.
Not a fan of that eye, but overall it’s certainly some of the more thoughtful ‘art’.the eye is, of course, the Abyss .607 tag
Of course. I’d missed that connection. But now it all becomes clear. Abyss. 607. Yes….

Only thing I can think of that’s remotely close is
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fc/Brasilian_Integralism_Flag.svg/800px-Brasilian_Integralism_Flag.svg.png
But I can’t imagine why anyone in Australia would be picking up South American pseudo-fascist symbols, particularly when Integralism (and for that matter Peronism) weren’t particularly racist.
Most of the tags with that eye thing are just plain vandalism I’ve seen this on a guy’s parked trailer in Lyneham for example.
Is there more than one person doing this stuff? Cause some looks like art but the majority is just visual garbage.
If it’s just one person, when they get caught I hope they have to pay for what will be a massive clean up.

Seen front on, it most resembles the Han character “Zh?ng / ? “, meaning central or middle.
Bugger, forgot about the problems displaying some characters. Zhong with the first tone. Horizontal rectangle with a vertical line dividing in half and extended to twice the height of the rectangle.
I think it’s best you don’t do that again. Thanks.
Righto.

Not sure what symbol you’re thinking of. It doesn’t resemble any that I can remember from my youth, nor does it look like anything on the Anti-Defamation League site ( http://www.adl.org/hate_symbols/default_graphics.asp ).
Also remember that white supremecist skinheads were a subset of the group, not the whole.
Thanks for the link. The symbol I was thinking of is this one: http://www.adl.org/hate_symbols/racist_odin_rune.asp That page of symbols is incomplete because I remember that the Eureka Stockade flag and symbol was also appropriated by hard right groups including National Action for use on posters and literature in the late 1970s/early ’80s. I remember seeing these posters in Kingsford and Kensington, Sydney near the Uni of NSW denigrating Asian students and Vietnamese boat people.
In the late 70s and early 80s in Adelaide, the group/s that used the Eureka Flag most consistently seemed to be the BLF, some Resistance units, and others along those lines. National Action used a white logo on black flag.

Of course. How could anyone not know that? And what a treasured contribution to Canberra’s streetscape it is.
