The past two weeks has seen the Sunrise Cafe (Alinga Street, just up from the Pancake Parlour), with a big CLOSED sign.
Is the place really closing down? The owner sick?
Enquiring minds want to be, er, enquiring.

Did the Sunrise used to be the Blue Moon, many years ago? One of the very old milk bars in Canberra, my father used to go to it in, I think, the 30s.
And is the Manuka one the Downtown Milk Bar? Similar vintage.

No, the cafe that’s similar to Sunrise along from Charmers …

That sure narrows it down huh ?
Save your tears folks! The owner only kept it open as a, um, hobby, for want of a better word. Did NOT need the business to turn over a cent. Similar story to the cafe on the main drag in Manuka.
The owner finally gave in and took a ‘dianetics stress test’ pushed by the Pancake Parlour owners… Scientologists have since taken over his life and business in exchange for one book and a lowly position in the grand pyramid scheme.
I’ve been in there few times. I always found the smell of old stale cooking oil depressing. I would never eat there, but their bottled water was just fine.
I have no idea why it isn’t open at the moment. I hope it isn’t due to the ill health of either of the ol’ buggers that attend it.
Honestly, I don’t know. It probably is that place, I never went in there because I have an ongoing issue with their prices (which are always way high) and there are much better places to eat at in town, like Gus’.
But still, it’s strange seeing the shop all dark, full of stock, and just sitting there closed for such a long time.
