Hi everyone,
In anticipation of Christmas, can anyone tell me the best place and time/day to buy fresh oysters in Canberra (preferably northside)?
Thanks in advance!

For oyster lovers in Tuggereanong there is a new, large fish shop at Erindale shops which sells 25 un-shucked Clyde River oysters in the shell for $10. These are not those horrible, fat, tasteless “Pacific” oysters that most clubs and restaurants in Canberra offer. The new fish shop has great fish (especially Orange Roughy) and helpful advice; beats the pre-packed crap that Woolies there sell..
+1 for the Erindale Fresh Fish Shop. He’s new, having a go and sells very tasty quality fish. Agree with the Orange Roughy, my wife’s favourite!!!

Prestige Oysters in Kippax is the best. They shuck their oysters on-site. They have Syney Rock and Pacific oysters straight from the oyster farm and if you’re a seafood lover they have the freshest fish and prawns. They get their fish 2-3 times a week from the Sydney Fish Market.
+1
The oysters at Prestige Oysters are lovely and big. Great value too!!

The oyster shop at Cook shops has the best. They will shuck them for you while you wait.
There is a guy from the bay selling seafood in the magnet mart carpark on weekends.
Oyster Haven is still highly recommended. Worth the short trip to Fyshwick.
They deal in cash only and you will need to call about their opening hours as they aren’t just always open all the time. Plus I think last Saturday was their final day open for this year.
The Oyster Haven, up the end of Geelong St Fyshwick next to where the Rebels mc clubhouse used to be. I remember a few years ago most people were too scared to visit and there were always great oysters and prawns there. Haven’t been there recently but I’m sure it would still be top-notch 🙂
yep felix, the seafood shop in the belco markets is there and thriving and i bought astress some long-awaited rich spawning tassie oysters there last week (shellfish not recommended for pregnancy so she had pined for them) – they were rather excellent as this is the best time of year to buy tassie oysters – all other times of the year are only very good to buy them…
bernies from the bay at charnwood shops…….they have their own oyster lease at bateman’s bay…..
I have a feeling the seafood truck on Sulwood Drive, Wanniassa has had Oysters for sale at times. But I forget the times he is there.
But there is another way that I wouldn’t of thought possible-http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/sunday-telegraph/meet-the-oyster-police/story-e6frewt0-1225812051252
There is often someone selling oysters at the farmers market at EPIC, either one of the people that does seafood in general, or there is a oyster farming family from Batemans Bay who only sell sydney rock oysters with prices starting from $7.50 a dozen (more for larger ones)
Not sure if there is still a seafood shop at Belconnen Markets, haven’t been there in years.

I’ve often thought the same thing about cow’s milk; or any milk for that matter. Who was the first person to decide to taste the product of an udder.
What about the first thing you drank!

Have you ever thought about what was going through the mind of the first person to try eating an oyster? Here’s this thing that looks like it belongs hanging out of a bullock’s nose, and this person says to themselves ‘this looks like it might be tasty’…?”

I think the question should be “why to get oysters?”
